Elman’s Legacy
Elman Peace was founded on the courageous vision of Elman Ali Ahmed, a pioneering peace activist known as the “Somali Father of Peace.” He famously urged communities to “Drop the Gun, Pick up the Pen,” inspiring youth to choose education and dialogue over violence.
“Elman Ali Ahmed’s slogan ‘Drop the Gun, Pick Up the Pen’ has become a rallying cry for peace advocates around the world.” -BBC News

During the civil war of the 1990s, Elman Ali boldly championed human rights, disarmament, and reconciliation. In 1996, Elman Ali was tragically assassinated for his relentless pursuit of peace, leaving behind not only a powerful legacy but a resilient family determined to continue his transformative work.
“Elman Ali Ahmed was not just an advocate for peace; he embodied it. His legacy continues to inspire peace movements globally.”
-Amnesty International

His widow, Fartuun Adan, and their children returned to Somalia in 2007, driven by Elman Ali’s enduring spirit and committed to restoring dignity, fostering reconciliation, and empowering communities to build sustainable peace.
Today, Elman Peace stands as a testament to Elman Ali’s legacy. Internationally recognized and locally grounded, the organization continues to champion his principles, driving change through community-led reintegration initiatives, advocacy for human rights, and steadfast support for marginalized voices.
